Headboard storage

Multi purpose built-in furniture

As an undergraduate student I sought to optimize the limited space of my bedroom with a built-in storage unit. It being an old apartment, previously heated with a fireplace, meant that the existing chimney was still present in the corner of the room. This made the placement of the twin-bed difficult, as the small size of the room required the bed being placed flush with two of the walls to allow for circulation in the room. The chimney however made it impossible and a vacant space was left between the bed, wall and chimney.

I therefore designed a costume furniture piece to solve both the vacant space and my functional dwelling needs. The unit functions both as a cushioned headboard, laundry-basket, shelf, and storage unit.

The unit was designed specifically for that space, as the two wall wasn’t completely orthogonal. It was however not a problem, as an initial mapping of the corner revealed the needed gaps and offsets. The plywood parts where then milled on a CNC router and assembled directly in the room. Colour pallet of the fabric and paint was chosen to compliment the existing tone of the room.
